TOPSHAM -- U.S. Army Sargeant Corey Garver of Topsham, age 26, died Sunday of injuries sustained when an IED went off near his patrol in Paktiya Province in Afghanistan.

Garver's mother lives in Louisiana and his father and stepmother in New Mexico.  Garver was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Rep. Chellie Pingree released the following statement Tuesday: "Sergeant Garver died defending his country and we owe him and his family a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice.  I know words can't ease the pain that his family is feeling, but I hope they know that the thought and prayers of the people of Maine go out to them during this most difficult time."
