Earthquake rattles midcoast

BOOTHBAY HARBOR -- A small quake rattled the midcoast Monday afternoon.  It was felt widely throughout the region.

According to the USGS, the temblor measured only 2.4 on the Richter scale, and was centered in the ocean six kilometers SE of Boothbay Harbor.

Residents from Brunswick to Rockland reported feeling and hearing the earthquake, which some said sounded like a bulldozer or a freight train.  There was one major jolt, which occurred at 1:20 p.m.

No serious damage or injuries were reported, although some residents in Wiscasset reported items falling off shelves.
